Time: 3 Contact Hours
Mental health is about as important to the well-being of nurses and patients as their physical health. But while it’s relatively easy for a nurse or a CNA to care for another person’s mental health, it’s just as difficult to check his or her own – or to put it this way, slow down and “sharpen his or her saws”. The lack of mental health awareness is the main reason why health care practitioners are not only stressed out, but aren’t able to do their best work for a very long time. This is why we believe annual training in mental health awareness is needed!
Outcome
After taking this course, the expected outcome is that a CNA will apply methods of self-care to improve his or her own mental health, while being able to care for the mental health of patients and residents.
Objectives
As a CNA, you will need to be proficient in the following skills:
- Recognizing the difference mental wellness and mental illness
- Managing stress and recognizing how one can enjoy doing tasks
- Understanding the difference between mental illness and developmental disorder.
- Recognize the common mental illnesses and major symptoms of each
- Determining the best methods to care for patients with mental illnesses. Please note that this course does not detail how to care for individuals with developmental disabilities.
